Kafue National Park

Still haven't had the blog renaissance which will actually explain what I'm doing in Zambia with the Clinton Foundation yet, but can do quick photo update:

Went camping in Kafue National Park in Central Province a few weekends ago, and did some boating. It was pretty amazingly beautiful, and while some friends and I had ambitious plans for a delicious campfire-cooked meal (butternut squash, etc.) it was an insane thunderstorm at night and I ended up sleeping in a giant pool of water in our non-waterproofed tent.

That said, it really was awesome scrambling eggs over an open bonfire in the rain (they were pretty good), and then telling cheesy ghost stories in a leaky tent over wine and whiskey while lightening and thunder really rolled all around us. Also, despite waking up soaked through, I had a pretty good night's sleep! Here are some photos:

Kafue River-- beautiful during the day, stormy at night

While on the river, realized we were seeing a localized downpour. That ended up being right on top of the camp site.

The camp site was owned by a larger lodge that was really nice, although right on the river and thus also open to hippos (which are pretty terrifying actually).

Post-egg scrambling over an open fire, preparing for dinner before torrential rain began sweeping through. Christina was chef extraordinaire, balancing the frying pan over an unbelievably hot and roaring bonfire (in the rain!). I got to play panicked prep chef.
